Established 1995, The Blaauwberg Therapy Centre
is one of the primary multidisciplinary medical centres in the
Table View area. Established by Mandy Knaap (Physiotherapist)
and Janet Bytheway (Psychologist) the Blaauwberg Therapy centre
offers medical professionals the facilities to run their own practices
in a relaxed, friendly and professional environment.
The Blaauwberg Therapy Centre has expanded
to include the following para-medical professionals:
MANDY KNAAP
I have lived in Table View since the age of 2 years. I attended Table View Primary School and matriculated from Milnerton High School in 1986. I graduated from Stellenbosch with a B.Sc. degree in Physiotherapy in 1990. My first physiotherapy post was at Groote Schuur Hospital. I then started working in private practice at Bayside Centre in Table View in 1991. After 2 years of employment I bought the practice that I was working in. I moved the practice to Blaauwberg Therapy Centre which was established in 1995. The Centre is a multidisciplinary Centre where we have physiotherapists, psychologists, colon hydrotherapist, remedial therapy, speech therapist, masseuse, occupational therapy, baby clinic, dietician and a Learning Styles Educator.
Karen Roux attended Charlie Hofmeyr High School in Ceres and obtained the Senior
Certificate with distinction in 2002 (Western Cape top 50 students). She graduated from Stellenbosch University in 2006 with a B.Sc in Physiotherapy. She commenced her community service year at the National Hospital in Bloemfontein in 2007 and completed the year at Wesfleur Hospital in Atlantis. Karen joined the physiotherapy practice at Blaauwberg Therapy Centre in 2008.
In the physiotherapy practice we treat a broad spectrum of conditions, including the following: headaches, neck and back conditions (acute and chronic), sports injuries, sinusitis, chest conditions (e.g. bronchitis and pneumonia), bursitis, bedsores and other open wounds, peripheral joint problems like tennis elbow, overuse and repetitive strain injuries. Although we have equipment in the practice, we do mainly hands-on treatment.
We give advice on ergonomics (correct posture and computer work station set-up) and preventative back and neck care. We do dry needling and McConnel taping techniques. We also do one-on-one rehabilitation after back injuries, surgery or sports injuries. We treat both acute and chronic problems and do maintenance treatment.
I have a special interest in treating neck conditions, especially headaches originating from the neck.
Karen has an interest in the treatment of neck conditions, lower back pain and headaches.
We unfortunately do not have the facilities to do back rehabilitation classes and do not treat high or low tone problems (like strokes and cerebral palsy).
We do home visits when required. We charge medical aid rates and are open 8.00 am- 6.30 pm weekdays and 8.30 am- 12.00 pm on Saturdays.
Physiotherapy treatment is now also available at Knowledge Park, Heron Crescent, Off Century Boulevard, Century City. Treatment is available on Thursday mornings from 11.00am by appointment only. Please phone 0215576066 to book. When booking please mention that you would like to be seen at Century City.
What is the role of physiotherapy in the management of low back pain?
Assessment : A thorough evaluation to pinpoint the cause of the symptoms
Prevention : education of patients regarding back care, good posture, ergonomics
Promoting : healthy lifestyle habits, exercise, stress management, coping skills
Treatment : manual therapy especially in the first 6 weeks of onset of low back pain
Rehabilitation : especially important in chronic cases and to prevent recurrences in acute cases
Appropriate referral to: GP, Specialists, biokineticist, psychologist, liaison psychiatrist
What treatments do we offer patients with Low Back Pain at Blaauwberg Therapy Centre?
- Manual therapy: MAITLAND, MULLIGAN & McKENZIE mobilisations, soft tissue massage, manipulation
- Ergonomic advice, posture correction – how to position your pillows, how to choose a mattress, how to lift correctly and how to sit correctly at your desk, how to set up your work area
- Dry needling / McConnell taping techniques
Rehabilitation - involving strengthening exercises specifically (but not exclusively) to Transversus
- Abdominus and Lumbar Multifidi muscles, stretching exercises and pause exercises which can be performed at work, Pilates
- Electrotherapy ( laser, ultrasound, interferential) and heat
In treating lower back problems, all the physiotherapists at Blaauwberg Therapy Centre concentrate on a combination of hands-on therapy and rehabilitation after a thorough assessment is done to determine the origin of the problem.
JANET BYTHEWAY
I have a special interest in working with children and families.
Who can be seen?
Adults are seen for anxieties (including general anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, post traumatic stress), depression (including post-natal depression and grief work); work stress, relationship difficulties and personal development.
Children are referred with a wide range of difficulties including anxiety (school refusal, phobias), depression, behavioural problems (aggression, lying, stealing), poor academic progress, (learning difficulties, concentration difficulties), trauma (divorce, crime, loss), other life changes.
What happens in an assessment?
Child: A thorough assessment provides the necessary information for an appropriate intervention. All assessments of children (pre-adolescents) include interviews with the parents, the child, the schoolteacher (if appropriate) and other therapists involved with the child. A feedback session outlines the difficulties identified and allows a forum for discussion of treatment options including play therapy, parent counselling and filial therapy.
Filial therapy training for parents is offered as a treatment option as well as a parent-child relationship enrichment option. Filial therapy involves the training of the parent to use basic child centred play therapy skills in order to conduct special play sessions at home with her/his own child.
An adult assessment will usually be conducted in the first session. After which a therapeutic plan will be drawn up in consultation with the client.
A primary diagnosis of alcoholism, drug addiction and anorexia cannot be treated in this practice, as these require specialised interventions. However, I would be happy to facilitate referrals to appropriate organisations.
I work from a narrative perspective. I have been trained to use various therapeutic modalities and have the belief that the correct choice of treatment modality for each individual is essential to ensure a good response to treatment.
The practice is open from 08:30 to 17:30 daily. Medical Aid Rates are charged. Most medical aids accept direct account submissions from this practice.
Janet Bytheway matriculated from Settlers High School, completed her BA (Psychology and English) at the University of Cape Town and her BA (Hons) at University of Port Elizabeth. Masters level training took place at the University of the Western Cape and her internship was completed at Lentegeur Psychiatric Hospital. She started in private practice in Table View in 1992 while lecturing part time in psychology departments of the University of the Western Cape and Varsity College. In 1995 her practice moved to Blaauwberg Therapy Center, a multi disciplinary centre where she continues to work alongside six other psychologists, a remedial therapist, learning styles educator, three physiotherapists, a colon hydro therapist, an occupational therapist, two speech therapists and a masseuse.

What is Colon Hydrotherapy?
It is a safe, gentle irrigation and cleansing of the Colon. (Large Bowel)
Why is it necessary to cleanse the Colon?
Many of today’s health problems are being traced to the colon. High fat, low fibre and hard to digest foods clog the colon so that it is unable to eliminate them. The longer this waste stays in the body the more toxic it becomes. Our bodies are being poisoned because the moisture that is being absorbed from the colon has to pass through this toxic waste that has attached itself to the lining of the colon. This toxic moisture is then distributed throughout the body, poisoning all of our vital organs and deteriorating the body’s immune system.
The resulting toxaemia can cause chronic conditions, such as constipation, sinus problems, headaches, migraine, allergies, chronic fatigue, flu and colds, arthritis, immune related illness, skin related problems such as acne, eczema, etc.
Special attention needs to be given to the risk of Colon cancer, which is ever on the increase.
Meat and other wastes that have been trapped in the colon for long periods of time, become so rotten, putrid and toxic, that they slowly begin to poison the whole body, and may even eventually lead to Colon Cancer. Colon Hydrotherapy is the most effective way of clearing the colon of waste that has been collecting there for years. Once the colon has been completely cleansed, your body will begin to absorb the clean moisture, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, electrolytes etc, from the colon as it is designed to do. The result is: Improved health and Vitality, more energy, no constipation, mental clarity, a feeling of lightness and well being, and much more.
The Procedure
A treatment will usually last between 30 to 45 minutes. Water is warmed to body temperature and is introduced into the colon via a small speculum. The introduction of warm water into the colon, combined with gentle abdominal massage, will induce peristaltic contractions, and will aid in loosening and dislodging impacted and hard faecal wastes, which are then removed from the body via another tube attached to the speculum. The therapist is in control of water pressure and temperature at all times.
The dignity and modesty of the client is maintained at all times. Each client receives new sterilized equipment, which is discarded immediately after that treatment, therefore maintaining complete hygiene and cleanliness.
Water enters the colon via controlled gravity, which is extremely gentle, there fore integrity of the colon cannot be damaged in any way.
Who can benefit?
Anyone who wants to improve their health, but especially those suffering from the following:
Abdominal disorders, Allergies, Arthritis, Asthma, Bloating, Candida, Constipation, Diarrhoea, Fatigue, Gas, Gout, Head aches, Halitosis, Irritable bowel syndrome (Spastic Colon), Lethargy, Liver sluggishness, Obesity, PMS, Sinus problems, Skin disorders (Acne, Eczema, Psoriasis etc.) Also anyone whose diet is high in meat or dairy products.
How many treatments?
This will depend on the individual, usually anywhere from 3-6 sessions, over a period of 2-5 weeks. A maintenance session is recommended every 3-6 months. .
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How can you tell if you would benefit from Colon Hydrotherapy?
A: Everyone can benefit. Even healthy people will experience an increase in energy and wellbeing.
Q: What are the signs and symptoms of an unhealthy colon?
A: A person whose colon is clearing properly will have 2-3 bowel movements per day, the colour will be light brown, it should be firm but soft with minimal odour. Any symptoms to the contrary indicate a Colon that is not functioning effectively.
Q: Is Colon Hydrotherapy safe?
Yes. In fact due to modern equipment and professional supervision, it is much safer than the common home enema.
Q: How does Colon Hydrotherapy compare to a normal enema?
A: An enema only reaches the rectum and lower portion of the Colon, whereas with
Colon Hydrotherapy, the entire length of the Colon is reached, ensuring that all impactions and blockages are dislodged and removed.
Q: Do treatments hurt?
A: No, in fact many people report the treatments as being relaxing and refreshing.
Q: How much of the Colon is actually cleansed during a treatment?
It is possible for the entire length of the Colon to be reached. The hardness and quantity of waste present will determine how many sessions are needed to clear it entirely. The small bowel is not directly involved.
Q: Is there any possibility of bacterial or viral contamination from the use of the therapy equipment?
A: No, absolutely no danger. Equipment is presterilized and disposable. These disposables are used once only and then discarded immediately.
Q: How long does a treatment take?
A: Actual treatment time is approximately 30-45 minutes, but you should plan 1½-2 hours for your initial visit, and 1 hour for all subsequent visits.
Q: Does having a menstrual period at the time of treatment have any effect on the treatment?
A: No, in fact it can be a good time to receive treatment, since your body is already cleansing.
Your flow will not interfere.
Q: What should I do to prepare?
A: Avoid eating meat and dairy for 24 hours prior to the session. Be as relaxed as possible, and maintain a positive and cheerful attitude. You can only benefit from Colon Hydrotherapy.
Q: If I feel run down or fluish during the Treatments, should I continue?
A: Yes, these conditions are usually a sign that your body is actively trying to expel a build up
of toxins in your system, and the treatments will assist your body in this. It is quite important that you continue at this stage.
Q: Will I experience any intestinal discomfort or fatigue after cleansing?
A: Usually not, but cleansing can stir up old debris and toxins, so you may experience some minor fatigue, headaches or nausea. If any abdominal discomfort occurs, it is recommended to rest and apply a warm pad to the abdominal area. Peppermint or chamomile tea can be soothing at this time. Any discomfort will usually pass within 24 hours.
Q: Can I work after a treatment?
A: Yes. This can usually be treated no differently than a normal bowel movement.
Q: Do I need a Flora replacement?
A: During therapy some flora will be removed, but that is no different to a normal bowel movement. However, it is recommended to take a flora supplement to improve the bacterial balance, as this is usually upset in an unhealthy colon, and taking flora after the colon has been cleared increases the ability of the flora to flourish effectively.

ILANA SACHAR - MEDIATOR

Mediation - a Co-operative Solution to Conflict
Mediation is an effective, co-operative, form of dispute resolution that gives the people involved an opportunity to find a solution that suits them, without destroying the possibility of a future, even if different, relationship.
During the process the mediator works with the parties to identify their needs and find their own solutions, helping to create an environment conducive to problem-solving rather than finger-pointing and blaming. This applies equally to family/divorce mediation and to commercial mediation, even though the mediation strategies differ.
The mediator acts as a neutral third party in a confidential, voluntary process that is conducted without prejudice. In more cases than not, the disputing parties find that through mediation they are able to find solutions to all, or most, of their points of difference.
Often the mediation process provides an opportunity for the people involved in the dispute to hear each other anew, or even for the first time. It also allows the participants to arrive at their own agreements or arrangements rather than having these imposed on them by a magistrate or judge.
Ideally, mediation should be undertaken before participants go to court, in family matters before divorces are finalised, in commercial matters before formal proceedings are instituted.
While no legal advice is offered during the mediation process, nor psychological therapy conducted, the family mediator can help with any of the problems that arise when couples split up, such as drawing up a parenting plan, which would include care and contact arrangements for children; maintenance/financial support; property and other financial matters.
Ilana Sachar is an accredited family and commercial mediator, practising from the Blaauwberg Therapy Centre in Table View.
