As an educational psychologist, I specialize in the following areas:
• Psychoeducational assessment of learning, behavioural, emotional or social difficulties of children and adolescents. Other assessments offered are for:
i) School readiness: if you are uncertain about your child’s readiness for the transition to formal schooling
ii) Subject choice or school placement: if you are uncertain whether your child is in the correct school setting or your adolescent does not know what subjects to choose for Grade 10
iii) Career development or counselling: for Grade 11 and 12 learners who are uncertain about their path
All assessments include a full report, feedback and, if requested, feedback to teachers
• If necessary, referral to specialists in other areas (occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, learning support educator, paediatricians, physiotherapists, nutritionists, general practitioners, psychiatrists)
• Therapy with children and adolescents: my approach is eclectic blending sand-tray, play therapy, animal-assisted therapy and narrative therapy
• Parent support and guidance
• Family therapy
I am accompanied in my work by my golden retriever co-therapist, Layla.
The following are possible areas that may require support from us:
• Your child or adolescent’s academic performance is not adequate. The following problems may be identified: reading, writing, spelling or mathematics difficulties; attention deficit; low motivation and perseverance; low self-esteem and reduced risk-taking
• Your child or adolescent is gifted and under-stimulated in the school context
• Your child or adolescent displays inappropriate behaviour such as temper tantrums, aggression or withdrawal
• There is concern about your child or adolescent’s general emotional well-being
• Your child or adolescent has experienced trauma, either directly or within the immediate support system
• As a parent, you need guidance regarding supporting, managing or stimulating your child or adolescent.
